I’ve been a single mother of two boys, now ages 18
and 15, for close to fifteen years, and I have countless stories to share, so
here is one that has always stuck in my mind.
My boys were very little, say five and two. We were
in our local fast food restaurant and they were eating their chicken nuggets
and French fries. Being quiet, not bothering anyone. The little guy was
standing in his seat, but I had next to me so he couldn’t fall. And the other
guy was busy eating his food on the other side of the table. All was good.
Then these two women walked by and one of the
abruptly stops, looks at me and says, “Thank God those days are over, I could
never do that again”. And I remember thinking, “Who asked you?”
It’s not like I was shouting at them, or they were
running around like crazy kids?
That scene has stuck in mind for one reason after
all these years, and one reason alone. I found it so incredibly hurtful that
anyone would say such a thing (you can think all you want, but to say it)? Here
I was, having a wonderful time with my two little guys and then have some
strange women say something so rude and obnoxious?
That bothered me for days afterward.
So the moral of the story? There are plenty of
people out there in this world of ours who love to prick holes in your good
time. People who want to rain on your parade.
Don’t let them!
As always,
